Transitioning to Medicare? – Medicare Supplements from BCBSNC

February 8th, 2017

If you are transitioning into Medicare either because you are turning 65 or have become newly eligible due to a Senior Couple Using Laptop At Home
disability, you will likely want to consider enrolling in a Medicare Supplement.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina can help. Because traditional Medicare, Parts A & B, do not cover some medical expenses, it’s important to understand what other options are available to you to help supplement your Medicare and offset your out of pocket health care costs.

Even before you are eligible for Medicare, you can begin reviewing your options.  Explore Medicare Supplements and begin deciding what plans work best for you.  Consult with a licensed Medicare Agent to discuss available plans and begin thinking about what kind of plan best fits your budget and your lifestyle.  Keep in mind that Medicare Supplements through Blue Cross Blue Shield are accepted by all Medicare providers.  Remember that the best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement is during your initial enrollment period.

Medicare Supplements are designed to fill the gaps that exist in a traditional Medicare plan and can give you the peace of mind of knowing you will have the coverage you need when you need it most.  Supplements can help pay your Medicare deductibles, coinsurance and copayments and can significantly reduce your out of pocket expenses.

Dental Blue – Enroll a Dental plan for 2017!

January 19th, 2017

bigstockphoto_smiling_faces_53265Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and practicing preventive health maintenance includes paying attention to oral health.  Having a dental plan that covers your preventive care dental visits and also provides coverage for other basic and major dental services is a smart way to protect your health and the health of your family.  Unlike medical plans which are subject to an Annual Open Enrollment period, you can enroll in a Dental Blue insurance plan at any time during the year.

Now that you’ve gotten your health insurance in place for 2017, consider enrolling a dental insurance plan.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina offers dental coverage for individuals under 65 as well as Senior plans.  Seeing your dentist on a regular basis does more for your health than give you a pretty smile.  In fact, regular dental check-ups can tell your dentist a lot about your overall health and whether or not you may be developing certain health conditions.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a relationship between gum disease and certain health conditions such as heart disease and stroke.  Research suggests that oral health very often mirrors the condition of your body’s overall health and many other diseases like leukemia and diabetes actually show symptoms in the mouth, such as swollen gums, ulcers, and dry mouth.  Seeing your dentist on a regular basis allows your dentist to monitor changes and developments that could alert them to more serious health issues.

January 17th, 2017

Last Chance And Last Minute With Clock Signs, Blue And Red DrawnWe are now in the final weeks of Open Enrollment 2017 and if you still have not enrolled your Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina health plan, now is the time to get covered!  Keep in mind, however, that you must submit an application by January 31st to have coverage beginning March 1st.  If you miss the deadline, you may not be able to enroll in health insurance until the next Open Enrollment.

Under the law of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), you are required to maintain qualified health insurance or possibly incur a tax penalty.  This is known as the individual mandate.  For 2017, the tax penalty is $695 per person or 2.5% of your income, whichever is higher.  In addition, if you do not have health insurance, you will be responsible for the costs of all health care you use over the course of the year.

Blue Cross Blue Shield NC offers qualified health plans in all 100 counties in North Carolina and plans are available both on and off the Marketplace.  Based on your income and the number of people in your household, you may qualify for a premium tax credit (federal subsidy) to help reduce the cost of your plan.  In addition, you could qualify for reduced copayments and deductibles.  For people under the age of 30, Catastrophic plans are available and these plans typically have a lower monthly premium.

At NC Health plans, we are committed to helping our customers choose and enroll the BCBSNC health plan that best suits your needs at a price that fits your budget.  We can help you determine subsidy eligibility, discuss plan options and walk you through the enrollment process.  We can help you submit your application online or directly over the phone in a few short minutes.

Don’t let 2017 come and go without securing the health coverage you need. For more information on North Carolina insurance coverage, please visit our website at www.nchealthplans.com or call our toll free number 888-765-5400 and speak with one of our experienced and professional agents.

Can’t Afford Obamacare? – Private Health Insurance Plans Are Available

December 30th, 2016

people, business, finances and money concept - close up of businDue to the rising cost of health insurance premiums and stricter guidelines surrounding enrollment periods, many people are turning to non-compliant private health insurance as a long-term solution. These plans are referred to as Short Term or Temporary Health Insurance plans, but many can be issued for a longer policy period. Because these private health plans are not subject to the laws of the ACA, they are less-expensive and can be purchased outside of the annual Open Enrollment period.  For individuals and families who have either missed Open Enrollment or who simply cannot afford an ACA-approved Qualified Health Plan, private health insurance coverage is a viable option. NC Health Insurance – Get Vision Coverage Now!

December 5th, 2016

The patient during an eye examination at the eye clinicDid you know that most health insurance plans do not cover routine eye exams, glasses or contact lenses?  If you recently enrolled or intend to enroll a health plan for 2017, you may want to consider adding a vision plan.  Regardless of your age or health, routine eye exams are an important part of practicing preventive health care.  Even if you think your eyes are in great shape, an eye exam can help your doctor see potential problems you may not notice.  Unfortunately, many ACA health insurance plans do not offer vision coverage and this can leave you with a big gap in coverage and a lot of potential out-of-pocket costs.  Having a vision insurance plan can assist you in maintaining routine eye care and will even help pay for contacts and glasses should you need them.

Eye exams are especially important for young children because they can help ensure that eyes are developing normally and can assist parents in identifying any problems with vision a young child may have, but not be able to express.  In addition, during a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor will not only determine if you need prescription glasses or contacts, but also check for diseases of the eye such as glaucoma.

For as little as $11.40 a month, you can make sure your eyes are covered and can save hundreds of dollars on contacts, glasses and more.  A vision plan is a smart and inexpensive way to protect one of your most important assets – your eyes!

NC Medicare Supplement – Is a Medigap Policy Right for Me?

November 30th, 2016

Senior student in classA Medicare Supplement, sometimes called Medigap, is a health insurance policy designed to “fill the gaps” in Original Medicare (Medicare Part A and Part B).  Basically, a Medigap policy picks up where Original Medicare leaves off.  These plans are sold by private insurance companies, like Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, and the policies are federally regulated, meaning they must cover basic benefits and pay for most of the original Medicare coinsurance and copayment amounts.  There are 11 standardized Medigap plans (Plan A – Plan N) and Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC offers all of them.

The “core” benefits of all Medicare Supplement plans include:

  • Medicare Part A coinsurance for days 61-90 of a hospital stay
  • Coverage of up to 365 additional days of a hospital stay during a member’s lifetime after Medicare hospital benefits have been exhausted
  • Coinsurance or copayment amount for Medicare Part B services after meeting the yearly deductible
  • The first 3 pints of blood per calendar year
  • Hospice benefit

Medicare Supplements help eliminate any unexpected costs you might incur should you have only Original Medicare.  Keep in mind that Medicare Supplements are different from Medicare Advantage plans, often referred to as Part C and pay benefits very differently.  To be eligible for a NC Medicare Supplement plan, you must reside in the state of North Carolina, be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B, and be age 65 or older OR disabled as defined by the Social Security Administration, be on kidney dialysis or transplant eligible.

There is an open enrollment period for Medicare Supplement plans.  You have six months to buy a Medigap policy with guaranteed issue and this period begins the first day of the month in which you are BOTH age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.  During this period, you cannot be denied coverage based on health history.  The Open Enrollment period is usually the best and simplest time to purchase a Medicare Supplement plan.

Transitioning into Medicare can be a confusing process, but the more you know about Medicare and what types of supplemental insurance are available to you the more equipped you will be to make the best decision for you and your health care needs.  For more information on North Carolina insurance coverage, please visit our website at www.nchealthplans.com or call our toll free number 888-765-5400 and speak with one of our experienced and professional agents.
