How Can You Help Me? – Benefits to Having a BCBSNC Agent

Friday, May 29th, 2015

bigstockphoto_hand_shake_147012Between web generated quotes, online applications, automatic bill pay and the healthcare Marketplace, you may be wondering why in the world you would even need an insurance agent.  When so much can be accomplished right over the phone or online, is there really any benefit to contacting a BCBSNC health insurance agency and what can we possibly do to make purchasing insurance a simpler and more satisfying experience?  Although it may seem counter intuitive, the truth is that despite all of the technology and all the companies and agencies involved now in purchasing health insurance, the process is actually more complicated than ever.

The Affordable Care Act alone has added so many pieces to the insurance puzzle that it can leave your head spinning just trying to determine who is eligible to purchase health insurance and when, let alone who qualifies for a federal subsidy and what determines eligibility.  Open Enrollment, Special Enrollment, Qualifying Life Events, Premium Tax Credits, Subsidies, Tax Penalties, Cost Share Reduction Benefits and so on are only some of the new terms that now have a profound impact on your health insurance policy and how you go about applying for and purchasing it.

In addition, even though these terms can be researched online and applications completed through various websites and phone lines, the process of purchasing health insurance can be overwhelming even for the most well-versed among us.  We all know what a huge difference there is between knowing a fact and understanding how that fact impacts our lives on a personal and financial level.  That is the very reason we hire attorneys, accountants, doctors and contractors.  We rely on the expertise of those whose job it is to understand their various industry and guide us in making the best decisions based on their professional experience and understanding.  Health insurance is no different!  In fact, more than ever before it is important, if not imperative, to consult a health insurance professional before purchasing a health plan.

And that’s where Jerry Ballard and Associates can help.  The good news is that unlike hiring an attorney, accountant, doctor or contractor there is no fee associated with contacting our office.  In fact, having an insurance agent does not impact the cost of your health plan in any way.  All it does is allow you the opportunity to have a personal contact person at your disposal to help explain the process, discuss the plans and determine subsidy eligibility and how obtaining a federal tax credit can impact the cost of your health insurance premium.

At Jerry Ballard and Associates, it is our pleasure to provide the professional guidance you need when purchasing health insurance either on or off the federal Marketplace.  It is our desire to make the application process as painless as possible and help you determine whether a subsidized or unsubsidized plan is the best choice for you and your family.  We will discuss your options in detail, making sure you are 100% comfortable with the BCBSNC health plan you choose prior to enrollment and we will then follow up to make sure your plan is properly processed and that you know how and when to make your payment.

Having an insurance agent is important and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina understands that personalized service is always in your best interest.  In truth, having an agent is one of the great benefits that is available to you when you purchase a BCBSNC health plan.  Don’t let health insurance overwhelm you and don’t make important decisions about your health coverage without fully understanding your choices and the implications of your choices.  At Jerry Ballard and Associates, we are determined to help you through the process from start to finish!

Catch Some Zzzz’s – Are you Getting Enough Sleep?

Thursday, May 21st, 2015

Exhausted Businessman Sleeping At His Desk YawningDo you find yourself feeling drowsy during the work day?  Is it sometimes difficult to keep your eyes open while driving?  Maybe you are one of the many Americans reaching for that fourth of fifth cup of coffee in the afternoon just to keep yourself alert and awake.  If so, you may be experiencing sleep deprivation.  Although the amount of sleep a person needs depends on a number of varying factors, including age, many experts agree that if you are experiencing frequent drowsiness, you are probably not getting enough sleep.

As it turns out, sleep is as important to our health as diet or exercise and not getting enough sleep can have just as many adverse effects on our bodies as overeating or being sedentary.  In fact, sleep deprivation can lead to many serious health issues such as memory problems, depression and a weakening of the immune system.  Having a weakened immune system will increase your risk of becoming sick as well as increase your perception of pain.  In addition, getting too little sleep creates what some experts call a “sleep debt,” which is similar to having a bank account that is overdrawn.  This sleep debt occurs because the amount of sleep a person needs increases as the days with too little sleep increase.  In this way, there is an exponential increase in the amount of overall exhaustion a person may feel when he or she is not sleeping enough.  Eventually, your body will demand you pay this debt and although we may get accustomed to getting less sleep than we need, our judgement, reaction time and other functions will still be impaired and our immune systems will be compromised.

If you find yourself drowsing while driving, be advised.  Driver fatigue is responsible for an estimated 100,000 motor vehicle accidents each year, many resulting in fatalities (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).  Although many of us try to combat this drowsiness by ingesting large amounts of caffeine, neither caffeine nor other stimulants can truly overcome the effects of sleep deprivation.  If you are having trouble keeping your eyes focused, if you can’t stop yawning, if you can’t remember driving the last few miles or you are having trouble holding your head up, you are too tired to drive and the only thing that will cure you is rest.

Let’s face it, Americans are productive people.  We work long, hard hours and also want to be involved with family and friends.  We work in our yards and in our homes and spend our weekends playing with kids or hanging out with neighbors.  We are busy people and sometimes even feel guilty for falling asleep early or taking a much needed nap.  Sleep deprivation, however, is an increasing concern among medical professionals.  In order to determine if you are getting enough sleep consider the following:

  • Infants require 14-15 hours of sleep a day
  • Teenagers need 8.5-9.5 hours of a sleep a day
  • Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep a day, with women requiring more sleep than men
  • Pregnant women may need several more hours of sleep than normal

If you are one of the many Americans who simply aren’t sleeping enough ask yourself why and make some adjustments.  Perhaps you could turn off the television and go to bed earlier.  Possibly sleep later on the weekends or days when you do not have to work.  Schedule in a nap on the days that allow.   Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC knows the power of prevention.  This year make a commitment to eat healthier, exercise regularly and sleep a little more.  Whatever it takes, make sleep a top priority and a part of your preventive health care regimen.

Still Uninsured? – What to do About Your Health Insurance Until Open Enrollment

Monday, May 18th, 2015

Enthusiastic family buying online lying down on bedAre you one of the many Americans who missed Open Enrollment 2015?  Despite your best efforts, did February 15th come and go and still you are uninsured?  Perhaps you even missed, or did not qualify for, the Special Enrollment period that was in place until April 30th for those individuals who received a tax penalty on their 2014 tax return.  If so, you are not wholly out of luck, though there are some things you should keep in mind.

Because we are now in the Special Enrollment Period, the rules regarding Qualifying Life Events are in full force.  A Qualifying Life Event (QLE) is some special circumstance in your life that allows you to enroll in health insurance outside of Open Enrollment.  As of now, the federal Marketplace has not announced any further exception to the rules of QLE’s, which simply means that you must have one in order to enroll in a health plan.  It is a good idea to review the full list of Qualifying Life Events and if you have one, or if you anticipate having one in the near future, then that will serve as your opportunity to get insured.  Keep in mind that you must complete an application for health insurance within 60 days of your Qualifying Life Event.

Another thing to note is that if you are uninsured for more than three consecutive months during 2015, you will incur a tax penalty on your next year’s tax return, unless you qualify for an exemption.  It is also a good idea to take a look at the list of exemptions and who might qualify.

Finally, keep in mind that being insured is about so much more than incurring a tax penalty.  It’s about having the coverage you need in case of a medical emergency and also about maintaining your physical and mental health through preventive care maintenance.  Further, having to pay a tax penalty is like throwing your hard earned money out the window because you get nothing in return.  On the other hand, although paying a monthly premium for health insurance may seem like a financial frustration, in the end it is money well spent.  Your most precious commodity is your health and making an investment toward it is always a smart decision.

If you are still uninsured and do not foresee having a QLE in the next few months, you may still qualify for Short Term Coverage.  Although not ideal in most circumstances and though it will not offer you the same level of benefits as an individual health plan, Short Term Coverage can be an effective way to fill in the gap between now and this year’s Open Enrollment which begins in November.  Short term coverage has some limitations and will not save you from the tax penalty in that it does not meet the Affordable Care Act’s 10 essential requirements, but it is still better than having no coverage in case of a medical emergency.

The bottom line is you do have options.  Although you may not be able to secure your first choice in health plans outside of Open Enrollment, you can be insured in the interim.  Also, this is a great time to begin doing research about the Affordable Care Act, what subsidy might be available to you and how that subsidy might affect your federal income tax.  Use this time to research the various health plans available to you and also what kind of network works best for you and your family.  Open Enrollment begins again in November, which believe it or not, is only 5 months away.  Even if you cannot obtain coverage during Special Enrollment, this is a great time to arm yourself with all the information and knowledge you will need to make the very best choice possible come Open Enrollment.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC is committed to helping the residents of North Carolina secure and maintain the health coverage you need.  For more information on Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina health insurance coverage, the Marketplace and healthcare gov  to apply for your subsidy, please visit our website at www.nchealthplans.com or call our toll free number 888-765-5400 and speak with one of our experienced and professional agents.  Let us help you navigate through the Health Care Reform changes in accordance with the new regulations of The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obama care.

A Little Research Can Save a Lot of Money – Understand your BCBSNC Network

Friday, May 15th, 2015

Happy senior couple with piggy bank. Isolated over white backgroThe terms “in -network” and “out-of-network” are terms you may have heard in relation to health insurance, but understanding the implications of these terms is of utmost importance as you select, enroll and manage your Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC health plan.  In fact, understanding your network and how it works can have a big impact on the cost of your health care and a little research can save you a lot of money.

The first thing to understand is that Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is not an HMO, meaning you are not required to stay within your network in order to have coverage.  This is good news in that it allows you more freedom and flexibility, as well as covering you in case you have an out-of-network provider you either prefer to use or must use for your medical needs.  The benefit of both in-network and out-of-network coverage is not something every health insurance company offers, which is one of the reasons BCBSNC is a recognized leader among health insurance providers and the only company with a presence in all 100 counties within the state of North Carolina.

That being said, it is still in your best financial interest to stay in-network. In fact, the difference between “in-network” coverage and “out-of-network” coverage can sometimes be the difference between a small co-payment and having an office visit that is subject to your medical deductible.  That is why understanding your network is so important.

Basically, BCBSNC has four different networks available:  Blue Advantage, Blue Select, Blue Value and Blue Local.  The broadest of these networks is the Blue Advantage and over 95% of doctors and hospitals in the state are a part of the Advantage network.  If you can afford it, this is always the network we would recommend as it offers you the most amount of choices when it comes to in-network providers.  Blue Select is a tiered network and though also a broad network, it will require a little more management in that some of the providers are Tier 1 providers and some are Tier 2 providers and there is a difference in the cost of these two tiers.  If you choose to go with a Blue Select plan, just keep in mind that you will need to research the tiers and providers therein prior to selecting a doctor or hospital.

Blue Value is a more limited network than either Blue Advantage or Blue Select.  In fact, the Blue Value network is not even offered in some areas simply because there are not enough participating providers to warrant that option.  However, in some instances and if your doctors and hospitals are a part of this network, choosing a Blue Value plan can be a smart way to save money as the monthly premiums are lower.  Keep in mind, however, that this is where doing your research becomes necessary.  If you have a particular doctor or specialist you must see, you may want to call his or her office and verify that they are a part of the Blue Value network and accept that plan.  Less expensive can be good, but only if you are satisfied with your choice of providers and have ample doctors and hospitals to choose from in your area.  You can always use the BCBSNC Find a Doctor tool to research providers.

Finally, Blue Local is the most limited of the four BCBSNC networks.  This is a new network with Carolinas HealthCare System and is only available in nine counties in North Carolina.  Again, this network will be less expensive, but also more exclusive.  If you do not intend to stay within the Carolinas HealthCare System, this is not the network for you as you will wind up paying out-of-network prices.

The main thing to remember is that a small amount of research can save you big bucks in the long run.  Taking a few minutes to call your doctors to determine which plans they accept and which networks they are a part of can make a drastic difference in your overall out of pocket healthcare expenses.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC is committed to providing a broad range of coverage at a variety of price points, allowing you to determine which networks and which plans work best for both your family and your finances.

Sniffs and Sneezes – Is it a Cold or Allergies?

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Young beautiful woman with tissue having runny nose.Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC knows the importance of staying healthy and with every change in season, new health issues arise.  Spring is in full bloom and on the bright side, the air is warming, trees are budding and the grass is turning green again.  Flu season has passed and the lethargy we can sometimes feel during the long winter months is lifting.  On the down side, temperatures are inconsistent, there is pollen in the air and people are sniffing and sneezing more than any other time of year.  The question is:  Are you suffering from seasonal allergies or do you have a common cold?  Believe it or not, the answer is not as simple as you might think and even doctors sometimes find it difficult to tell the difference.

Simply put, a cold is caused by hundreds of different viruses.  When any one of these viruses gets into your body, your immune system attacks it in an attempt to protect you.  Some of the effects of your immune system’s response are the classic symptoms of a cold.  For instance, congestion, coughing and sneezing are your body’s attempts to get rid of the invading virus.  Also, the germs that cause colds are contagious, meaning they are transferred from one person to another through sneezing, coughing or shaking hands.  At most, however, in a couple of weeks your immune system should fight off the virus and your cold symptoms should cease.

Allergies, on the other hand, are caused by an overactive immune system because your body is mistaking harmless substances, such as pollen or dust, for germs.  Once the mistake has been made, your immune system will begin attacking the pollen or dust as if it were a more harmful virus.  Your body then releases chemicals such as histamine, which in turn causes swollen nasal passages, runny nose, coughing, sneezing and watery eyes.  Unlike the viruses that cause colds, allergies are not contagious, though there could exist some genetic predisposition to developing them.

Although similar in symptoms, there are some basic differences between seasonal allergies and the common cold which may help you determine from which you are suffering.  Knowing the difference is important, especially when it comes to contagion and treatment.  Keep in mind these basic differences:

Duration:  A cold will last 3-14 days, whereas an allergy could last for days or months, as long as you are exposed to the allergen (pollen, dust, etc.).

Time of year:  A cold most often occurs in the winter months, but is possible any time of year.  Allergies can happen any time of year, but are most common during changes of season.

Onset of symptoms:  With a cold, symptoms take a few days to appear following infection with the virus.  Allergy symptoms can begin immediately after exposure to the allergen.

REVIEW THE FOLLOWING CHART FOR COMMON SYMPTOMS:

Symptom                                Cold                            Allergy

Cough:                                     Often                           Sometimes

Aches:                                     Sometimes                   Never

Fatigue:                                   Sometimes                   Sometimes

Fever:                                      Rarely                          Never

Itchy or watery eyes:               Rarely                          Often

Sore throat:                             Often                            Sometimes

Runny or stuffy nose:              Often                           Often

As is clear from the above list of symptoms, although there are differences between a cold and allergies, there are also some similarities.  One of the most important differences is the fact that one is contagious and one is not.  If you have a symptom that is not typical of an allergy, it is likely you have a cold and you may want to consult your physician, stay home from work or school and take medications aimed at relieving cold symptoms.  For seasonal allergies, there are a number of medications that offer relief, as well as some more natural home remedies.  Unfortunately, for those who suffer from allergies, full relief from symptoms may take as long as it takes the season to change.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC wishes you a happy, healthy spring and if seasonal allergies are taking their toll, take heart!  Summer is just around the corner!

Tell Mom She’s Special – Decadent Mother’s Day Dessert

Thursday, May 7th, 2015

Coconut PieThis is the season to celebrate Moms and all they’ve done for us over the years.  Personally, a vast majority of my memories of my mother are of her standing in the kitchen preparing a delicious meal or a decadent dessert.  I’ve often heard the statistic that the busiest day in the restaurant business is Mother’s Day and that makes sense.  We want to relieve our Moms of the burden of making yet another meal.  As for me, I like the idea of giving Mom a break, especially now that I have children of my own and understand the hard work that goes into being a Mom.

This year, however, try doing what Mom does for you.  Instead of taking her out for supper, perhaps prepare a meal in the home for her to enjoy.  Pour her a glass of wine or make her a cup of coffee and let her sit down while you don the apron and oven mits for a change.  Despite how much work it is to keep a household running, most Moms truly love their homes and enjoy having peaceful moments in their own space.  Find a recipe, do the shopping, set the table, prepare the meal and clean up afterwards!  I can almost guarantee Mom will not only feel special, she will have a wonderful Mother’s Day memory.

If the task of preparing an entire meal feels a bit too daunting, try this.  Take Mom out to dinner, but have a delicious dessert prepared for her when you arrive home.  Nothing is quite as nice as homemade and Mom understands how much work goes into making homemade ANYTHING.  Trust me when I tell you, a homemade dessert will make her day.

Because my own Mom loves coconut, I found this recipe from allrecipes.com for delicious, decadent Old Fashioned Coconut Cream Pie.  It’s not difficult to make, but it will take some time to chill in the refrigerator so plan ahead.  Using sweetened flaked coconut, half and half, sugar, vanilla and whipped topping, there is really nothing particularly healthy about this recipe, but we think that’s okay.  Mother’s Day is one of the days splurging is definitely allowed.  The pie will take about 20 minutes to prepare, another 30 minutes to bake, but about 4 hours in the refrigerator.  Our suggestion is to get your pie chilling either before you cook your Mom a meal or while you take her out to eat so it will be ready for dessert.

This year, let Mom know how much you appreciate all she’s done to make your life a little sweeter by giving her something sweet of her own to enjoy.  And to all you Moms out there, Happy Mother’s Day from Jerry Ballard and Associates and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina.

BCBSNC Encourages You to Get Outdoors and Enjoy North Carolina

Monday, May 4th, 2015

Asheville North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway Spring Flowers SceniNorth Carolina offers some of the most diverse and beautiful landscapes in the continental United States and this spring, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC encourages you to get outdoors!  BCBSNC understands the importance of preventive health care, which is why preventive care benefits covered at 100% are a part of every Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC health plan.  The benefits of regular outdoor activity are indisputable.  Not only are there physical benefits, such as aerobic, cardiovascular and muscular fitness, improved functioning of the immune system, lower blood pressure, weight loss and reduced arthritis pain, there are also a number of psychological and environmental benefits as well.  Being outdoors is good for the mind in that it can reduce stress, improve self-esteem and aid in fighting depression.  Even further, the Vitamin D our bodies absorb from moderate exposure to sunlight is also vital for an overall sense of mental health and physical well-being.  In addition, regular outdoor activity can also increase environmental awareness, keeping us more in touch with our world and more inclined to care for our planet.

Personally, I grew up in Texas and one of the things I most appreciate about North Carolina is the geography.  Texas is such a huge state that it literally takes days to get from the Gulf of Mexico to the greener landscapes of the Panhandle or the drier, desert climate of El Paso.  Residents of NC, however, don’t have the same problem.  We can enjoy the cool beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway, and then drive but a few short hours to enjoy the warm waters of the Crystal Coast.

In fact, this spring you don’t even need a gym to get moving and improve your health.  North Carolina has some of the best hiking trails in the United States so take advantage of those mountains.  When the summer heat becomes too much to handle, plan a day or two in the mountains where you can walk and hike with ease, while enjoying breathtaking views.  Walking and hiking are an excellent source of cardiovascular exercise and will help keep your heart healthy all year long.

Or if you prefer, head down to the ocean.  For more strenuous exercise, go surfing or paddle boarding.  Both of these water sports engage all of your muscle groups and will help build both strength and agility.  For a more relaxed approach, go jogging or take a walk on the beach.  Walking or running in the sand is a moderately strenuous exercise that can build muscle strength and endurance.  Beach exercise is not only fun and relaxing, it is a great way to enjoy the outdoors while taking in the sun and surf.

The main thing to remember this spring is don’t get stuck indoors!  There are so many benefits to outdoor exercise and so many ways to enjoy the great outdoors and the beauty of North Carolina.  Of course, before starting any weight loss or exercise program, always consult your doctor first and get his/her clearance for physical activity.  Find out if there are any issues that would affect you participating in a new nutrition and fitness program.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo – Fun Facts and Fabulous Food

Saturday, May 2nd, 2015

hungry-girl-600x450Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina wishes you a Happy Cinco de Mayo celebration!  Remember as part of your preventive health care to drink responsibly, eat healthy, exercise regularly and take some time to enjoy friends and family. Most of my childhood and early adult life were spent somewhere between Dallas, Texas and San Diego, California where Cinco de Mayo is as important a day as Super Bowl Sunday in terms of celebration.  Cinco de Mayo, which is Spanish for “fifth of May” is celebrated in the United States and in Mexico, primarily in the Mexican state of Puebla, where the holiday originated and is referred to as The Day of the Battle of Puebla.  The date is observed in commemoration of the Mexican army’s surprising defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 where General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin led his troops to victory.  Sometimes mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th, Cinco de Mayo is a day of pride for Mexicans and Mexican-Americans alike.

In truth, Cinco de Mayo is an historically significant holiday and one that has become increasingly important in the United States over the years.  Californians have consistently celebrated this holiday since 1863, even when the holiday was virtually overlooked in Mexico itself, and Cinco de Mayo celebrations became trendy during the 1940’s during the rise of the Chicano movement.  During the 1980’s, marketers, especially beer companies, jumped on the bandwagon and began promoting the holiday in full force, making it widely popular in major cities throughout the United States.  Celebrations typically emphasize Mexican cuisine, culture, music and drink.

Much like St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo has become a holiday that invites a celebration with friends and family.  Tacos, salsa, corn chips and guacamole are only a few of the tasty treats that make celebrating this Mexican holiday fun for everyone.  We found this recipe for a healthier version of guacamole from People Magazine and we think you will agree that it is not only delicious, but also guilt-free.  With only 73 calories and 4 g. of fat, each 1/4 cup of this guacamole contains 4 g. of protein and 2.5 g. of dietary fiber.  Easy to make and full of good nutrition, Hungry Girl’s Southwest Guiltless Guacamole Dip is sure to be a Cinco de Mayo favorite.

BCBSNC Health Insurance Premium – What Does it Pay For?

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

Stacks Of Coins On Graphs And ChartsWith all of the changes in the health insurance industry under the Affordable Care Act and an overall increase in the cost of health insurance for consumers, you may be wondering exactly what your monthly premium pays for and where all of that money goes.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is happy to answer that question.  As most people already know, your health insurance premium is part of a large pool of money collected by the insurance company, which is then distributed in the form of health care claims to those in need of medical care.  A portion of that pool of money pays for health care and a portion goes toward operating the insurance company itself and creating a profit.  The question most people have is how much of that money actually goes toward claims and how much is simply profit for the company.

Recently, BCBSNC announced that they spend almost 86 cents of every premium dollar to pay for customers’ health care needs, including visits to the doctor’s office, surgeries, diagnostic tests, prescriptions, contact lenses, etc.  In fact, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC paid $5 billion dollars in claims in 2013 alone, making that $5 billion dollars worth of coverage directly benefiting BCBSNC customers.  In addition, there is non-medical spending that still directly affects BCBSNC members in a positive way.  Non-medical expenditures include things like customer service and technology improvements, which provide customers with the most up-to-date, user friendly website and an exceptional customer service experience.

Even further, under the Affordable Care Act there now exists what is called the Medical Loss Ratio Requirement.  This requirement prevents insurance companies from engaging in excessive spending on administration, salaries and other business costs.  Insurance companies are now required to use 80 cents of every premium dollar collected from individual and small group customers to pay customer claims and support quality of care.  Even before the law, however, BCBSNC exceeded that standard, and in 2012 they paid $260 million dollars more toward health care expenses than was required under the law.  This requirement also means that insurance companies cannot increase rates simply as a way to increase profits, but must maintain a minimum percentage of dollars spent on health care or refund that money to customers.

Let’s face it, the cost of health insurance is on the rise and it can be a strain on any income.  Understanding where your insurance premium goes is an important part of understanding your health insurance plan and what makes it valuable.  Although it may be tough to pay out a few hundred dollars a month, when the need for medical care arises, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is there to make sure you and your family are covered.

Managing Health Care – What Blue Cross Blue Shield NC Recommends

Monday, April 27th, 2015

bigstockphoto_health_insurance_policy_5009314Managing your health can be tricky, but there are some things you can do to make a big difference in the cost of your overall health care.  Although this list is not exhaustive, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina offers some great tips on how you can help keep the cost of health care to a minimum.  Whether you are enrolled in one of many popular plans, including Blue Advantage, Blue Value or Blue Select, the following management tips can help you maximize your plan’s coverage and minimize your plan’s cost.

1.  See your primary care physician first:  Typically, primary care doctors offer a variety of important services and usually cost less than more expensive specialists.  Your primary care physician is also more acquainted with your health history and is better equipped to help guide you should you be in need of more specialized care.

2.  Stay in network:  Choosing an in-network provider is of utmost importance as it will help reduce your out-of-pocket expense.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC offers a convenient Find a Doctor tool that will allow you to research whether your particular doctor is a part of the BCBSNC network.

3.  Determine if you have an emergency:  For situations that are non-life-threatening, urgent care facilities will often save you both time and money.  If you do have an emergency, you should always call 911 or visit the closest emergency room, but for less serious illnesses and injuries an urgent care doctor may be your best choice.

4.  Read your benefit book:  Although not the most exciting book you may read this year, it could be among the most important.  Understanding how your plan’s benefits work will help you avoid unexpected costs and reading your booklet or contacting a benefit specialist can save you big bucks.

5.  Talk to a nurse first:  As a BCBSNC member, you can call Health Line Blue 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to speak with a specially trained nurse and ask questions before you visit your health care provider.  Discussing your symptoms with a nurse or even your own physician first can help you determine if an appointment to your doctor’s office is necessary or not.

6.  Ask questions:  Very often, the billing department at your provider’s office can tell you the exact cost of a procedure or service before you have it.  This can help you avoid unexpected fees.

7.  Practice preventive care:  With every Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina health plan, preventive care maintenance is covered at 100% so take advantage of those benefits.  Regular check-ups and immunizations go a long way in helping you to stay healthy.

Last Chance for 2015 – Federal Marketplace SEP Ending April 30th

Friday, April 24th, 2015

last chance or opportunity time on clock is ticking away now orThe Special Enrollment Period the federal Marketplace granted for those individuals who did not meet the February 15th deadline for Open Enrollment is ending April 30th.  This could be your last chance to enroll in a health insurance policy until January, 2016.  This Special Enrollment Period is not for everyone, but if it applies to you, you could have one last opportunity to get insured.

In an effort to enroll as many Americans as possible, the federal government installed this Special Enrollment Period for people who meet the following three criteria:  1) you were not insured in 2014; 2) you had to pay a tax penalty when you filed your 2014 taxes; 3) you will attest to the fact that you were unaware of the tax penalty or did not fully understand the implications of that penalty.  If these criteria apply to you, you have 6 more days to complete an application for health insurance with the federal Marketplace.  Keep in mind, your application must be completed and submitted by midnight April 30th, meaning you have selected a health plan and your application has been sent to Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC.  Depending on your effective date, however, you may still have a period of time before you will need to make your first premium payment.

Once this Special Enrollment Period ends, your opportunity to enroll in health insurance becomes much more limited.  Under the rules of the Affordable Care Act, for the remainder of 2015 you will need to have a Qualifying Life Event in order to purchase health insurance.  If you do not have a Qualifying Life Event, you will have to wait until Open Enrollment 2016 begins in November and you will not have health coverage until January 2016.  Also, don’t forget that the tax penalty, sometimes called the “individual mandate,” for being uninsured is increasing in 2015 and instead of paying $95 per person or 1% of your household income (whichever is greater), next year you will pay $325 per person or 2% of your household income (whichever is greater).  The tax penalty will increase again for 2016.

The bottom line is it doesn’t pay to be uninsured.  Not only are you running the risk of incurring potentially devastating health care bills, you are also not able to maintain your health and wellness through regular preventive care physicals and health maintenance.  If you are one of the many Americans who are still able to enroll in health coverage under the Special Enrollment Period ending April 30th, take advantage of this opportunity to get insured!  Instead of throwing money away on tax penalties, make an investment in your wellness and peace of mind.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is pleased to provide the residents of NC with quality health coverage at a competitive price.  Don’t wait another minute!
