{"id":7452,"date":"2016-03-25T12:12:43","date_gmt":"2016-03-25T16:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nchealthplans.com\/news\/?p=7452"},"modified":"2016-03-07T08:53:32","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T13:53:32","slug":"senior-fitness-bcbsnc-promotes-wellness-at-every-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nchealthplans.com\/news\/2016\/03\/senior-fitness-bcbsnc-promotes-wellness-at-every-age\/","title":{"rendered":"Senior Fitness &#8211; BCBSNC Promotes Wellness at Every Age!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-7462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nchealthplans.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Grandparents-And-Granddaughter-68290537-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Grandparents And Granddaughter Walking On Winter Beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nchealthplans.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Grandparents-And-Granddaughter-68290537-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nchealthplans.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Grandparents-And-Granddaughter-68290537-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nchealthplans.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/bigstock-Grandparents-And-Granddaughter-68290537.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \>My\u00a0Grandfather was a tobacco farmer in rural North Carolina and he said retirement was a strange kind of irony.\u00a0 He had more free time than\u00a0ever before\u00a0in his life\u00a0to do things, but he also had less strength and energy.\u00a0Of course, my\u00a0Grandfather was a part of a generation that thought a lot about hard work, but not a lot about exercise.\u00a0 Over the years, what research has proven\u00a0is that staying active and physically fit is more important than ever as we age.\u00a0 In fact, maintaining a regular fitness routine can actually help combat the negative effects of aging, such as the lack\u00a0of strength or energy my Grandfather complained about.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nchealthplans.com\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina <\/a>promotes wellness and preventive care at every age, and although I&#8217;m not sure my Grandfather ever would have considered participating in any of the following activities, here are some great ways you can stay in good shape well into your Senior years.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong><strong>Yoga &#8211; <\/strong>I&#8217;m getting a good laugh just picturing my Grandfather in a pair of shorts on a yoga mat, but here&#8217;s the truth.\u00a0 Maintaining flexibility is crucial as our bodies age and become more stiff and sore.\u00a0 Seniors tend to have more range of motion problems in their joints and the ability to move freely is fundamental to every other aspect of life.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/fitness-exercise\/a-z\/yoga-workouts\" target=\"_blank\">Fitness activities such as Yoga <\/a>and Pilates improve flexibility and balance and can assist with stress relief, which aids in muscle relaxation and sleep.\u00a0 Even if you don&#8217;t join a Yoga class, make sure you are stretching every day to maintain optimal flexibility.\u00a0 Typically, a good stretch should be held between 45 seconds &#8211; 1 minute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. <\/strong><strong>Water Aerobics &#8211; <\/strong>There are a multiplicity of health benefits to shallow-water exercise.\u00a0 Water provides added resistance\u00a0but also\u00a0helps regulate your body temperature, reducing the risk of over-exertion and muscle strain.\u00a0 Adding resistance, such as shallow-water, can double the calorie burn for activities such as walking, running and dancing.\u00a0 Many communities offer<a href=\"http:\/\/www.livestrong.com\/article\/133611-water-aerobics-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\"> water aerobics <\/a>classes and it is a great, not to mention fun, way to stay fit!\u00a0 If you aren&#8217;t interested in an aerobics class, consider simply swimming.\u00a0 Swimming is easy on the body, but a great way to keep yourself heart healthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. <\/strong><strong>Weight-lifting &#8211; <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.senior-exercise-central.com\/beginning-weight-training.html#.VtXIrXkm5Ms\" target=\"_blank\">Maintaining muscle strength <\/a>is very important to daily living.\u00a0 Whether you are carrying in a gallon of milk or climbing out of bed, strength training can reduce the rate at which your bones deteriorate.\u00a0 Having muscle surrounding your bones could help save you from a potential break or fracture.\u00a0 In addition, building muscle helps reduce fat and increases metabolism, both of which will keep your body more physically fit.\u00a0 Try to perform strength exercises on all major muscle groups twice a week, starting with light weight and increasing as you gain strength.\u00a0 If you have never lifted weights before, make sure you have an instructor show you the correct form to avoid injury.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.
