At 6:30 this morning when I took my dog outside for her morning ritual and it was still dark and I could see my breath in the frosty air, I realized that once again, winter is coming… and with winter comes flu season.\u00a0 Every year, people suffer from flu symptoms that cause children to miss school, parents to miss work and everyone in the house to feel miserable.\u00a0 More importantly, not only is the flu inconvenient, it can also be dangerous.\u00a0 In fact, according to Dr. Larry Wu, Regional Medical Director for Blue Cross Blue Shield NC, “Last year, thousands were hospitalized and more than 100 North Carolinians died from complications with the flu, with the most severe issues affecting people who have not had the flu shot.”<\/p>\n

Because Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina <\/a>is actively committed to promoting preventive care maintenance<\/a>, they have in place a 2015 flu shot program to help members take advantage of the vaccine and stay healthy during this year’s flu season.<\/p>\n

The 2015 program works like this:<\/p>\n

You\u00a0can get your\u00a0vaccination at\u00a0the Doctor\u2019s office, a walk-in clinic, or at a pharmacy.\u00a0 If participating urgent care and convenience care centers submit member flu shot claims to BCBSNC and that member has 100%\u00a0immunization\/preventive care benefits, BCBSNC will pay for the shots administered by these providers.\u00a0 Depending on specific benefits and the location of the provider administering the shot, however, some members may pay a co-payment or deductible.\u00a0 It’s important to check your plan’s summary of benefits to manage out of pocket expenses.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that because the 2015 flu shot has been updated to include new strains of the flu virus, having the 2014 flu shot won’t necessarily prevent you from getting the flu this year.\u00a0 It’s important to make sure you keep up-to-date on your flu vaccination on an annual basis.<\/p>\n
