\"Student<\/a>Wake Forest University has received a $3 million gift from Blue Cross Blue Shield<\/a> to help the school promote well-being at the university, Wake Forest officials said.<\/p>\n

The money will go to develop projects designed to promote what is being called a holistic approach to health that spans eight dimensions of well-being: physical, emotional, spiritual, social, intellectual, financial, occupational and environmental.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cOur approach to well-being is intentional and a natural extension of our mission to educate the whole person,\u201d said Wake Forest University President Nathan O. Hatch, in a statement. \u201cWell-being is not the absence of illness and stress, but the presence of healthy habits, purpose and joyful relationships. We are grateful to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina<\/a> for its transformative gift to enhance well-being on our campus and across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n

The university said that the uses of the grant would include support for the transformation of Reynolds Gym into a comprehensive center for well-being, as well as funding a director of well-being and seed grants for faculty research on health and well-being. The money would also support new well-being programs on campus.<\/p>\n

Brad Wilson, the president and chief executive of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, said that the company has hundreds of employees who live and work in Winston-Salem and wanted to do something for the community. Wilson said that the holistic approach is \u201can exciting case study\u201d that could help prevent illness or decrease its severity.<\/p>\n

University officials said that they have been working on ways to help students deal with high stress levels.<\/p>\n

Penny Rue, vice president for campus life, said students today will be graduating into a world of global complexity. She said the university has been creating ways for students to unplug, engage and connect to a deeper meaning and purpose.\u201d The new programs should help students develop healthy habits that can give them the resilience they will need going forward, she said.<\/p>\n

Provost Rogan Kersh said the gift would help the university improve the well-being of students, faculty, staff and community.<\/p>\n
