H1N1 Prevention, Symptoms and Treatment<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Flu season is likely to start earlier and be more widespread this year. The 2009 H1N1<\/span><\/span>influenza virus that triggered the April 2009 outbreak and caused only mild illness will <\/span><\/span>likely be the major strain. Standard strains of the flu will also be circulating, and there is <\/span><\/span>a chance that the flu (seasonal and 2009 H1N1) could cause more severe illness.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Flu symptoms <\/span><\/span><\/strong>include fever or chills <\/span>and <\/span><\/span><\/em>cough or sore throat. Symptoms may also<\/span><\/span>include runny nose, body aches, headache, tiredness, diarrhea, or vomiting. It is hard <\/span><\/span>to tell if someone who is sick has the 2009 H1N1 flu or seasonal flu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Prevention will play a very key role this year. Prevention includes protecting yourself<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

and NOT spreading the disease to others. Here\u2019s what you should do:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Prevent:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>A cough or sneeze may be the first symptom of illness. <\/span><\/span><\/strong>Therefore, every<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

time you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue and throw<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

used tissues in the trash.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>If you develop flu symptoms, make arrangements to go home as soon as<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

possible.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Stay home until at least 24 hours after you no longer have fever <\/span><\/span><\/strong>(100<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celsius) or signs of a fever (chills, feel very<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

warm, have a flushed appearance, or are sweating). Checking for absence of a<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

fever should be determined without the use of ibuprofen or acetaminophen.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\n\u00b7Hand washing protects yourself and others<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, so wash your hands often,<\/span><\/p>\n

especially after you cough or sneeze, or:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Before and after preparing food or eating.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>After using the restroom.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Before and after touching your nose, eyes or mouth.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>After you\u2019ve been in contact with commonly touched surfaces such as<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

doorknobs and handrails.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Use alcohol-based hand cleaners if soap and water are not available.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth to prevent spreading germs<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Vaccinate:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Get the vaccine for seasonal flu <\/span><\/span><\/strong>to prevent or decrease the severity of the flu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Also get the 2009 H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available <\/span><\/span><\/strong>(plan is for early to<\/span><\/span> mid-October). BCBSNC<\/a> will be waiving deductible and coinsurance payments<\/span><\/span> for the H1N1 vaccine administration for our fully insured members that do not<\/span><\/span> have immunization benefits<\/a>. Members in self-funded plans should check with<\/span><\/span> their plan administrator to determine if a copayment, deductible or coinsurance<\/span><\/span> will apply. All applicable copayment, coinsurance and deductible payments will still apply for the seasonal flu vaccine.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Priority groups <\/span><\/span><\/strong>should receive the 2009 H1N1 vaccine first. The Centers for<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list these groups as:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Pregnant women<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>People who live with or provide care for infants less than 6 months of age<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Health care and emergency medical services personnel<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Children and young adults ages 6 months to 24 years<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Adults ages 25 to 64 years with medical conditions that put them at higher<\/span><\/span> risk for influenza-related complications<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Get Well:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Most healthy people recover from the H1N1 or seasonal flu without<\/span><\/span> complications. <\/span>If you get the flu, it\u2019s important that you:<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Stay home from work or school.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Get lots of rest, drink plenty of liquids, and avoid using alcohol and tobacco.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Relieve the symptoms of the flu with appropriate over-the-counter<\/span><\/span> medications, or as directed by your doctor. ***However, <\/span>never give aspirin<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span> to children or teenagers who have flu-like symptoms, particularly fever<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>If you\u2019re at risk for serious complications<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, consult your provider as soon<\/span><\/span> as you can for recommendations for antiviral medications if you\u2019ve been<\/span><\/span> exposed to someone who likely has 2009 H1N1. You are considered <\/span>high<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span> risk <\/span><\/span><\/strong>if you:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Are under the age of 5 or over 65<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Are pregnant<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

o <\/span>Have a chronic medical condition, such as pulmonary disease,<\/span><\/span> asthma, diabetes, neuromuscular disorders, heart disease, or a<\/span><\/span> compromised immune system<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the warning signs that the sick person needs urgent medical attention<\/span><\/span><\/strong>:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Sudden dizziness<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Confusion<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Severe or persistent vomiting<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00b7 <\/span>Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
