Eye exams are especially important for young children because they can help ensure that eyes are developing normally and can assist parents in identifying any problems with vision a young child may have, but not be able to express. In addition, during a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor will not only determine if you need prescription glasses or contacts, but also check for diseases of the eye such as glaucoma.

For as little as $11.40 a month, you can make sure your eyes are covered and can save hundreds of dollars on contacts, glasses and more. A vision plan is a smart and inexpensive way to protect one of your most important assets – your eyes!

In addition, your Discount Card can help save you money on weight management programs, fitness centers, and other wellness-related products and services.

As a Discount Card member, you will receive discounts on all sorts of health care products and services from participating health care professionals, including retail chains and online providers. This includes doctor visits, urgent care, specialists, physical therapy and more. You can also save 18-20% on generic and name brand prescription drugs at leading drugstores and supermarkets, which sometimes price leading drugs below the discount rate. With the minimum discount guarantee, however, you are guaranteed to receive the lowest price available at that drugstore or supermarket on that day (this guarantee does not apply to pharmacies), meaning you can be sure to get your prescription drugs at the most affordable price. Your card can be used at drugstores nationwide, including Costco, K-Mart, Rite-Aid, Target, Walmart and many more.

The application process is simple and your Discount Card can be used to save on health care products and services for you, your spouse, and your dependent children. Your Discount Card can also work in conjunction with other health plans you may have such as Critical Illness or Temporary Health.

Having an Accident, Critical Illness or Hospital Indemnity plan that pays directly to you a flat sum of money should you face one of these unexpected events can save you from potentially catastrophic health costs. In addition, none of these plans are connected to any specific network of providers so they will complement any traditional health insurance plan and you can receive care from any doctor or hospital you choose.

The application process is simple and each of these plans offer great benefits at a low price to help reduce your financial risk should you be faced with an unexpected illness, accident or hospitalization. Traditional health insurance is a must, both in terms of the law and in order to ensure you are properly covered for illnesses, preventive care and other medical procedures, but traditional health insurance is not always enough. At NC Health Plans, we offer a wide variety of insurance products to help fill the gaps left by traditional insurance and add value to your current health plan.

Similar to exercise, which requires periods of strenuous activity followed by periods of rest to maximize training effects, periods of work combined with periods of relaxation maximize productivity. According to about.com, taking time off to rejuvenate will help insulate you from the symptoms of burnout that can arise from accumulated pressure making you “more creative and productive than your overworked, under-rested counterparts.” Ellen Langer, a psychology professor at Harvard University told CNN that mindless, uninterrupted routines tend to result in boredom, which hinders creativity and mindfulness.

Here at NC Health Plans, we love to be productive (not to mention relaxed) which is why we are convinced that taking a vacation is vital for mental health and physical well-being. In a society where stress is literally responsible for serious health conditions, taking a summer break might be the best thing you could do in terms of preventive health care. Because we are in the health insurance industry, we believe health matters. Not only should you be properly insured in case something unexpected occurs, but you should also do what you can to keep yourself feeling vital all year long. This summer, enjoy a little rest and relaxation.

We think it might make all the difference!

Breakfast, however, can be a tricky meal to provide for men as they often prefer something heartier and meatier than french toast and strawberries. Luckily, I found this little Father’s Day treat from Food Network that I’m certain will please the Dad in your life, not to mention any kids who may be hoping to share a few bites of Dad’s breakfast in bed.

Plan is an inexpensive way to eliminate or reduce high out of pocket healthcare expenses. The Out of Pocket Protection Plan helps pay your deductible up to $6350 as well as other copayments, and the benefits are paid directly to you in addition to any other coverage you may have. As an added benefit, this plan offers an Emergency Accident Benefit that pays $250 in case of accidents, up to four times a year. If you are confined in a hospital as a resident inpatient, the Out of Pocket Protection Plan will pay the inpatient benefit you select (either $100 or $200) for up to ten days per hospital confinement. That could amount to thousands of dollars back in your pocket!

With NC health insurance premiums on the rise, many people have chosen to enroll a health plan with a higher deductible in order to make their monthly premium more affordable. Many short term or temporary health plans also have high deductibles that can be difficult to meet. Although high deductible plans are a good way to keep health insurance costs under control, when you or a family member actually needs health care, it can be a big hit to your wallet.

If you are looking for an affordable way to help eliminate high out of pocket healthcare expenses or offset the deductible on your health insurance plan, the Out of Pocket Protection Plan could be the answer. For more information on North Carolina insurance coverage, please visit our website at www.nchealthplans.com or call our toll free number 888-765-5400 and speak with one of our experienced and professional agents.

The math is simple. If you have an NC health insurance plan with a $3000 deductible and could enroll in a plan that pays $6350 directly to you for a first time in patient hospitalization and $200 for every day you are confined up to 10 days, the Out of Pocket Protection Plan will more than cover your deductible. In addition, this plan offers a $50 benefit paid directly to you for 2 doctor visits a year, meaning less cost to you when you visit your physician. If your current health plan has copayments in place for doctor visits, the Out of Pocket Protection Plan could cover or exceed your copayments for routine care.

Offering an Outpatient Surgery Benefit as well as an Emergency Accident Benefit of $250 (up to 4 a year), the Out of Pocket Protection Plan is a smart way to save money. With incredibly low monthly premiums, this plan can more than pay for itself and can give you the comfort of knowing your deductible is covered when you need it most.

Did you know that more women die from strokes every year than men? It’s true and it’s just one of the reasons Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina is a huge advocate of women’s preventive health care. In fact, every BCBSNC health plan offers preventive care covered at 100%, including a variety of services especially aimed at keeping women healthy.

When it comes to the risk of stroke, although some factors such as smoking, diabetes or obesity do not discriminate against age or gender, others do and there are some risks that are unique to women. The following is a list of some of those special risks:

Hypertension: Almost 75% of people who have a stroke also suffer from hypertension and more than half of the adults with hypertension are women. As women get older, their risk becomes higher than men and unfortunately, high blood pressure has no signs or symptoms. It’s important to make sure you get regular check-ups, including a check of your blood pressure, on an annual basis.

Birth Control Pills: Women who take birth control pills could be twice as likely to suffer a stroke than those who do not. Typically, birth control pills can cause a stroke by triggering a blood clot in the vessel system. It’s important to get screened for hypertension before choosing a birth control pill, as hypertension can be a secondary cause of stroke.

Pregnancy: Preeclampsia is a form of high blood pressure that occurs during pregnancy and it can double your risk for stroke later in life. Women who suffer hypertension before or during pregnancy may need to take medications to lower blood pressure to lower their risk of stroke.

Soda Pop: Soda has been documented as a major cause of weight gain, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease, but a 2012 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition cited the link between sodas and stroke. They study discovered that people who drink one or more soda a day have a 16% higher chance of suffering a stroke than those who don’t. A good alternative to soda can be sparkling water or decaf coffee.

Atrial Fibrillation: Although women are tend to develop this condition later in life than men, they are more likely to have a stroke and die because of it. Atrial Fibrillation is a condition in which the top chambers of the heart beat irregularly, causing blood to thicken and form a clot which resides in the atrium. However, if the clot breaks free, it can enter other organs and cause a stroke.

Whether or not you are at risk for stroke, it’s important to maintain your health through preventive care maintenance. Regular check-ups are a vital part of your overall well-being and Blue Cross Blue Shield has you covered! If you are currently uninsured, consider enrolling in a BCBSNC health plan and begin a preventive care regimen. If you are already a member, take advantage of the preventive care benefits built into your Blue Cross Blue Shield NC health coverage.

Interestingly enough, any pet will do! From horses to dogs to goldfish, any kind of pet can keep you healthier. One of my son’s friends has a hedgehog named Patches and honestly just looking at this little guy makes me feel better.

Although the exercise of walking a dog will obviously increase health benefits, it appears that what really matters when it comes to health and pet ownership is the companionship a pet provides. Owning and caring for a pet provides both mental and physical stimulation, both of which contribute to healthier living.

Snuggling, stroking and spending time with a pet can help us relax and can have a soothing effect on our bodies as our heartbeats slow down and blood pressure reduces. In fact, studies indicate that for people with high blood pressure, having a pet is as beneficial to their health as reducing sodium or alcohol intake. Even further, pets can reduce the impact of grief or loss. Those who own pets are more likely to recover from a heart attack than non-pet owners and many hospitals use pets as therapy for hospitalized children. Pets also teach children important lessons about responsibility and children with pets are often more self-reliant, more sociable and less selfish than those without the companionship of an animal.

This year, if you are looking for ways to improve your health, consider owning or adopting a pet. If you have the time and patience and are willing to provide and care for a pet, you may find that you are the one who benefits the most! There’s more to preventive care than simply getting a check-up and pets can offer the companionship, affection and stimulation we all need to stay healthy in both heart and mind.
